How to build the Ultimate Linux Home Server - Part 3 - Adding Users, Configuring SMB and NFS

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Today’s section, Part 3 of How to build the Ultimate Linux Home Server, is on adding users to OpenSUSE via the command line and configuring Samba for sharing files. I’ve decided to do the guide on how to add users the old fashion way mainly because it’s faster and easier to do it via the terminal, and I’ve done it many, many times.

Adding users is crucial to having Samba working. Since we aren’t running an LDAP or NIS server, we are using local authentication on the Linux server to allow access to the shares.

iPhone killing Activation Systems

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I’ve been following Leo on twitlive.tv and there have been reports of people not able to get their iPhones due to the Telecom providers activation systems going down.

No one knows what the cause is, I’d assume that it’s because of high demand in countries that are getting the iPhone for the first time. 3 callers have reported the outages in Austria, Australia, and the Netherlands. Due to the systems being down, they had to send people home with “IOU’s” until the systems are back and functioning and they can unbrick them. Since there aren’t any stores open yet in North America, We don’t know if this will hit Canada and the US too.

Again, I have to thank Leo Laporte for doing this 24 hours of iPhone coverage. That takes alot to broadcast for 24 hours. Bravo!

To iPhone, or not to iPhone…

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Tomorrow is the big day, possibly eclipsing Christmas, it’s the day the iPhone 3G is available. I’ve been on the fence as to whether or not to get an iPhone tomorrow. My brother and my father both bought 16GB iPhones as soon as they were available, got them shipped to a border broker, and brought them up here to Canada to Jailbreak them and unlock them. They’ve both absolutely loved their iPhones.

My father was a dedicated Palm user. He bought his first Palm many, many years ago, a Palm III. He had many more after that, the Palm V, M100, M500, Tungsten, Tungsten T2, Treo 600, and recently the Treo 700p. Switching to the iPhone was possibly the biggest change in his Tech life. He uses his iPhone everywhere, since he’s had Unlimited Data from Rogers for the past 3 months, he’s been going crazy with data usage. Now that Rogers just announced 6GB for $30, he’s going for that and going to continue using data.

Now it’s my turn to make a decision. Back then, I wasn’t ready to drop $499 for the 16GB iPhone, and then have to pay for voice and another data. Now, I can get a good voice plan for $17.95, 6GB of Data for $30, and then the ridiculous System Access Fee of $6.95 and the $0.50 911 fee. So my total fee will be $61.98 per month to have an iPhone with voice and Data. I’m also then locked into a 3 year contract! Although that is a bit less painful since I’ll be using the iPhone for at least the next two years.

I’m still on the fence. It’ll probably come down to whether or not Rogers has iPhones available tomorrow after 10pm.
