How does 64 cores and 2TB of RAM sound?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

While I was reading the MSDN Blogs feed, I found this screenshot.

That is 2.046965 Terabytes of RAM and 64 CPU Cores. It’s only using 4% of the total amount of ram at the time of the screenshot, which is 92GB.

Seeing this made me wonder when is this going to be the norm? When will our laptops have 2 Terabytes of RAM? What could we possibly be using that would ever need 2TB of RAM? Will we actually ever need that much amount of RAM?

How to build the Ultimate Linux Home Server - Part 1

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Nowadays, most households have multiple computers and media devices, and sharing files and media between them all can be extremely messy. The best solution would be a home server of course!

I’ll be separating the whole guide into multiple parts. By the end, we will have accomplished:

* Installing OpenSUSE onto your Home Server
* DHCP
* DNS
* SMB/NFS File Sharing
* Media Sharing
* VPN

iPhone killing Activation Systems

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I’ve been following Leo on twitlive.tv and there have been reports of people not able to get their iPhones due to the Telecom providers activation systems going down.

No one knows what the cause is, I’d assume that it’s because of high demand in countries that are getting the iPhone for the first time. 3 callers have reported the outages in Austria, Australia, and the Netherlands. Due to the systems being down, they had to send people home with “IOU’s” until the systems are back and functioning and they can unbrick them. Since there aren’t any stores open yet in North America, We don’t know if this will hit Canada and the US too.

Again, I have to thank Leo Laporte for doing this 24 hours of iPhone coverage. That takes alot to broadcast for 24 hours. Bravo!

24 Hour iPhone 3G Live Coverage

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Leo Laporte is doing 24 hours of iPhone 3G  Launch coverage. He is asking for people to call in via GrandCentral, Skype, or ooVoo, if they are waiting in line or even if they aren’t.

If you want to watch him, you can catch him live via Stickam on Twitlive.tv.

Severe Graphical Glitches in OS X Leopard

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Recently I’ve been getting some very strange graphical glitches in Leopard 10.5.4 on my 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro (yeah, the “old” one). You can see the screenshot below.

It started around when I updated to 10.5.2, and quite rarely occurs, but nonetheless it is extremely annoying, even doing a full restore has not solved this glitch.

When it does happen, I’ve looked at the sensors via iStat Menu, and nothing is out of the

ordinary. All of the temperatures are within reason, the CPU and network load is low, and plenty of RAM remaining. The logic board has been replaced due to a sleep issue quite a few months ago, I don’t think it ever happened before that.

Most of the complaints that I have seen about such an issue have been on the Penryn Macbook Pro’s with NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics cards, while mine has the ATI X1600. I’m going to be giving Apple call soon. Very glad I decided to purchase AppleCare for it.
